Charshanbeh Soori

I love this time of year and by now, I think you understand my affinity for Fire. In the Iranian tradition, on the eve of the last Tuesday before the Spring Equinox, we gather to jump over fire as a ritual of release and transformation. Just days later, the Spring Equinox arrives, marking Norooz, the Persian New Year.

Charshanbeh Soori is an ancient tradition offering us all a portal to cleansing, protection, and renewal. It’s the night we harness the element of Fire for cleansing and protection in accordance with Zoroastrianism, a religion based on Fire worship and the elements, and the OG religion of the Iranian people.

Light a bonfire. A candle in your home works too if you’re not wanting to go out. If you'd like, you can also feed the fire with dried herbs or sacred smoke, offering gratitude to the Spirit of Fire before you jump.

Jump over the fire and say aloud:

Zardee-ye man az to, sorkhee-ye to az man.

This means: Take my sickness. Give me your vitality.

Ask the fire to take all that no longer serves you.
Sickness. Stuckness. Patterns. Sadness. Whatever it may be.

Jump again in the opposite direction and invite blessings into your life.

Ask the fire to bring vitality, clarity, and protection.
Envision everything you want to invite into the coming year.

Dance. Be happy. Howl. Shake it out. Get tribal.
